“SEO services” covers wildly different amounts of work depending on who is selling it, which is why two quotes for the same business can differ by a factor of five. Here is what the work actually consists of, who does which part, and what a month looks like from the inside.
An SEO agency runs four workstreams: technical work that makes a site crawlable and fast, content that targets queries with real demand, local presence such as listings and reviews, and measurement that connects all of it to enquiries. Most of what separates agencies is how many of those four they genuinely cover.
Worth naming the boundary early: none of this includes controlling Google's ranking output, running your ads, or answering your phone. An agency changes the inputs and reports honestly on what moved. What that reporting should look like is a fair thing to ask for before you sign — here is the dashboard our clients actually see.
Technical — Crawl, index, render, speed and structured data. Decides whether a page is eligible to rank at all, so it comes first.
Content and mapping — Research demand, assign each target to exactly one page, then write those pages so they answer the query and ask for the job.
Local and authority — Profile management, review cadence, citations and earned mentions — the off-site signals that decide the Map Pack.

What does an SEO agency do day to day?
On a typical account: auditing and fixing crawl, speed and structure issues; researching which queries have demand and assigning each to one page; writing and publishing those pages; managing listings, posts and review responses; earning or reclaiming links and mentions; and reporting on calls and forms rather than sessions. Early months skew technical, later months skew content and authority.
What is the difference between an SEO agency and a freelancer?
A freelancer typically owns one or two of the four workstreams deeply and subcontracts or skips the rest. An agency covers more of them but often at a layer of remove from the person doing the work. Neither is inherently better: the real question is which workstreams your site actually needs and whether whoever you hire covers those specifically.
What should an SEO agency deliver in the first month?
A technical audit with the fixes actually applied rather than only documented, analytics and call tracking configured so enquiries are attributable, a keyword-to-page map that assigns every target to exactly one URL, and the first pages scoped or shipped. If month one is described only as “discovery and strategy”, ask which deliverables will be finished by day thirty.
What does an SEO agency not do?
Most do not run paid ads, design brands, write your sales scripts or answer your phone — and none of them control Google's ranking output. It is also not an agency's job to fix a business that cannot service more customers. Being clear about the boundary is usually a sign of a serious firm rather than a limitation.
How many people work on one account?
It varies enormously and is worth asking directly. Large agencies often assign a strategist, a writer, a technical specialist and an account manager, with the account manager being your only contact. Small firms typically have one or two people doing everything, which trades bench depth for direct access. Ask who writes your content and who you call when something breaks.
