How to Choose an SEO Company (and the Red Flags to Walk Away From)
Almost every SEO pitch sounds the same, which is precisely the problem. These are the questions that separate agencies that do the work from agencies that report on it, and the specific answers that should end a sales call.
Choose on four answerable questions: who specifically does the work, what ships in month one, what reporting you can open yourself at any time, and what you keep if you leave. An agency that answers all four in writing is usually worth hiring; one that deflects on any of them is telling you something.
None of those questions require you to understand SEO. That is deliberate — the ones that do are exactly where a weak agency has the advantage over you. If you would rather keep the work in-house and pay only for senior direction, an SEO consultant can answer the same four questions without taking over execution.
Who does the work — Get names and roles. If your account is run by someone you will never meet, you want to know that before signing, not in month four.
What ships in month one — A specific list, not a phase name. “Discovery and strategy” as a whole first month usually means nothing shipped.
What you keep — Site, pages, listings, analytics and content should stay yours. Access granted, not ownership transferred.

“We guarantee position one”
Nobody controls Google's ranking output. A guarantee is either a misunderstanding of the mechanism or a deliberate misrepresentation, and neither is who you want holding your website.

“We will build you a new site — we keep it”
Agencies that retain ownership of your website or Google Business Profile are building a switching cost, not an asset. It also means a dispute can take your listing history with it.

“Here is your traffic report”
If the first number in a monthly report is sessions rather than calls and forms, the agency is measuring what is easy rather than what pays you. Ask what a good month looks like in enquiries.
How to Run the Evaluation
Three steps, in this order, before anyone sends a proposal.

Check their own footprint first
Search the agency's own money terms. An SEO company that does not rank for its own service in its own city is not automatically disqualified, but it is a question worth asking out loud and hearing them answer.

Ask for one contactable client
Not a logo wall or an anonymised case study. One current client who will take a five-minute call. The willingness matters as much as what the client says — we publish every review we have received, in full and will connect you with the client behind any of them.

Get month one in writing
Before money changes hands, a specific list of what will exist at the end of thirty days. This single request filters more effectively than any other question, and it costs the agency nothing if they intended to do the work.

How do I choose an SEO company?
Judge on four things: whether they will name who actually does the work, whether they will itemise what ships in the first month, whether you get direct access to reporting rather than a monthly PDF, and what you keep if the relationship ends. Agencies that answer all four plainly are usually worth their price. Deflection on any one of them is the signal.
What are the biggest red flags in an SEO pitch?
Guaranteed rankings, a named position on a named keyword by a named date, contracts that hold your website or Google Business Profile hostage, refusal to name the people doing the work, and reporting that leads with traffic rather than enquiries. Any promise about Google's output that the agency does not control should end the conversation.
Should I sign a long-term SEO contract?
Long terms are not automatically bad — the work genuinely takes six to twelve months, and an agency that can plan that far ahead often does better work. What matters is what happens at the end: your site, pages, listings and analytics should remain yours, and access should be granted rather than transferred. Ask what you keep, not just how long you are committed.
How much should I pay an SEO company?
Most small and mid-sized businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 per month, with owner-operated companies commonly between $1,000 and $2,500. Below roughly $500 the hours available cannot fund meaningful work, which is why cheap retainers default to bulk directory links. Price is a weak signal on its own; itemised deliverables are a strong one.
Is a big agency better than a small one?
Bigger buys bench depth, redundancy and process. Smaller buys direct access to the people doing the work and faster turnaround. The failure mode of a big agency is your account being run by whoever is junior and available; the failure mode of a small one is capacity and key-person risk. Ask each which of those applies to them and listen for whether they admit it.
How do I verify an agency's results claims?
Ask for a client you can contact, not a logo wall. Ask which specific pages they built and check whether those pages currently rank. Case studies with real numbers, dates and named clients are checkable; percentages with no baseline are not. An agency confident in its work will connect you with someone.
