Website Redesign Checklist: 20 Steps Before You Relaunch

A website redesign checklist has four phases: set goals and measure the current site, audit and rewrite the content, design and build for phones first, then test and launch with tracking in place. Work through the 20 steps below in order; most expensive redesign mistakes come from skipping the first phase, not the last.

The search-specific migration steps (redirect maps, indexation checks) have their own detailed list, linked in phase four.

Signs your business needs a new website

One of these is a nudge. Three or more usually means a redesign will pay for itself.

Visitors pinch and zoom

The layout was designed for desktop monitors and breaks down on the phones most customers now use.

You avoid editing it

Changing an opening hour or a price means emailing someone, so the site drifts out of date.

Services have changed

The pages describe what you sold three years ago, not what you sell today.

It looks unlike your business

Photos, colors and tone no longer match the company customers meet in person.

Word of mouth carries the business, not the site

Leads arrive by referral while the website contributes almost nothing you can measure.

The platform boxes you in

A site builder limits speed tuning, features or search control as you grow.

Phase one: goals and baseline (steps 1 to 5)

The first five items on any website redesign checklist are about direction. Decide what the new site must achieve before anyone opens a design tool, and record how the current one performs so the result can be judged honestly.

  • 1. Write down the top three actions you want visitors to take, such as calls, quote requests or bookings.
  • 2. Export current traffic, top landing pages and lead counts from analytics and Search Console.
  • 3. List every service and every town you want to be found for.
  • 4. Collect the questions customers ask most on the phone.
  • 5. Set the budget, the decision-maker and a realistic launch window.

The same practice before: capture this state first.

Phase two: content audit and page plan (steps 6 to 10)

Content decides whether the new design has anything useful to show. Most redesigns stall here, so give this phase the most calendar time.

  • 6. Inventory every existing page and mark it keep, merge, rewrite or retire.
  • 7. Plan one page per core service, plus a page for each town or region you cover.
  • 8. Gather real photos of your team, jobs and premises; stock images read as generic.
  • 9. Collect reviews, licences and credentials to use as proof on key pages.
  • 10. Draft copy that answers the phone questions from step four in plain language.

Phase three: design and build (steps 11 to 15)

Design follows the page plan, not the other way round. Review every layout on a phone before approving it on a laptop.

  • 11. Approve a small design system: type, colors, buttons and section styles.
  • 12. Put the phone number and main call to action where a thumb reaches them.
  • 13. Keep forms short and ask only what you need to reply.
  • 14. Compress and size images, and check page speed on a mobile connection.
  • 15. Choose a platform your team can edit, with hosting and updates assigned.

Phase four: test, launch and measure (steps 16 to 20)

Launch is a process, not a moment, and it is where a website redesign checklist earns its keep. The search-safety part of this phase is covered step by step in our migration checklist for keeping rankings.

  • 16. Pair each retiring address with its replacement and test those redirects on staging.
  • 17. Confirm forms, call tracking and analytics fire on the new pages.
  • 18. Proofread every page on a phone and a desktop.
  • 19. Remove any staging blocks so search engines can crawl the live site.
  • 20. Compare leads and traffic against your phase-one baseline at 30 and 90 days.

Full redesign or a refresh?

Not every tired site needs to be rebuilt. Match the scale of the project to the problem.

Our Tampa web design team will say which one your site needs after a short review.

How often should you redesign a website?

Rebuild when the foundation fails

A calendar rule of thumb matters less than the signs above. Rebuild when the platform, mobile layout or brand no longer fits.

Improve continuously in between

Adding pages, updating photos and fixing slow spots each quarter keeps a site useful for years and delays the next big project.

Three redesign traps we see most

Each looks harmless during the project and shows up as a drop in calls after launch.

Approving on a laptop

Stakeholders sign off on a big monitor while customers arrive on phones. Always review the phone layout first.

Pages quietly disappearing

A slimmer menu is fine; deleting the service pages that brought in searches is not. Merge them into the new structure instead.

No baseline to compare

Without the numbers from phase one, nobody can prove the new site performs better, and opinions fill the gap.

After the checklist, owners usually ask

Objection

Can we keep our current platform?

If it is WordPress, often yes. Sites built on Wix or similar builders are rebuilt in WordPress on our managed hosting, and that transfer costs nothing extra within the project.

Comparison

Which comes first, redesign or SEO?

Plan both together, so new pages are built for search from the start.

Proof

Can we see relaunched sites?

Before and after pairs are in our portfolio of rebuilt websites.

What happens next

Worried about losing rankings?

Our migration support service handles the redirect work.

Redesign clients across Florida and the Midwest

We rebuild sites for companies around Tampa Bay, the Nature Coast and the Midwest, with approvals on video. Florida examples include St. Petersburg website design work, and Illinois owners can look at web design in Naperville.

Relaunch questions, answered

What should be on a website redesign checklist?

Goals and a performance baseline, a content audit and page plan, mobile-first design and build, and a launch phase covering redirects, tracking, proofreading and a post-launch comparison.

How many weeks should a rebuild take?

Once content is ready, most service-business rebuilds we handle are finished and public within two to four weeks. Sites with dozens of location pages or bespoke tools need more time.

Can relaunching a site cost us search traffic?

Yes, when retired addresses get no redirect and useful pages vanish. Mapping every URL and testing redirects before launch prevents most losses.

What are the signs I need a new website?

Poor phone layout, pages you avoid editing, outdated services, a look that no longer matches the business and a site that produces few measurable leads.

Should I redesign or just refresh my website?

Refresh when the structure and platform still work but content or visuals are tired. Redesign when the platform, mobile layout or goals have changed.
