Website Migration SEO Checklist: Don't Lose Your Rankings

Migrations fail quietly. The site launches, everyone celebrates, and six weeks later traffic is down forty percent with no obvious cause. Almost every one of those failures traces back to something on this list that nobody did before launch.

How Do You Migrate a Website Without Losing Rankings?

By capturing a complete inventory of the existing site before anything changes, mapping every old URL to its closest equivalent, verifying those redirects on a staging environment, and monitoring indexation and rankings daily for the first two weeks after launch.

The inventory is the step that cannot be recovered later. Everything else on this list can be fixed after launch; a missing baseline cannot. Redirects are the part people worry about most, and worth understanding before you map them — whether redirects hurt rankings has a more useful answer than yes or no.

  • Inventory before you touch anything — URLs, traffic, backlinks, canonicals, schema, indexed status. Captured while the old site still exists.
  • Map every URL, not the popular ones — Low-traffic pages carry links too. A redirect map with gaps loses exactly what nobody was watching.
  • Watch daily for two weeks — A migration failure looks like nothing for a fortnight. Daily checks catch it while it is still cheap.

The Checklist by Phase

Each phase depends on the one before it. Skipping the first makes the rest unverifiable.

Before: capture the baseline

  • Full crawl of the live site, exported and saved
  • Every URL with traffic from analytics and Search Console
  • Backlink export so you know which pages carry earned links
  • Current rankings for your top fifty URLs, dated
  • Existing canonicals, schema and meta for each key page

During: build the mapping

  • Old URL to new URL for every page, not just the popular ones
  • 301 permanent redirects, never 302 temporary ones
  • One hop per redirect, with no chains through intermediate URLs
  • Retired pages pointed to the closest genuine equivalent
  • Redirect map tested on staging before it reaches production

Launch day: verify immediately

  • Confirm robots.txt is not blocking the new site
  • Check noindex tags left over from staging are gone
  • Spot-check redirects from a sample across the whole map
  • Submit the new sitemap and confirm it is being read
  • Verify analytics and conversion tracking fire on the new pages

After: monitor the recovery

  • Indexed page count daily for the first fortnight
  • Crawl errors and soft 404s in Search Console
  • Rankings for the top fifty URLs against the pre-launch snapshot
  • Internal links updated to point at final URLs, not redirects
  • Keep the redirect map in place indefinitely

Three Ways Migrations Go Wrong

All three are silent at launch and expensive by week six.

Staging settings shipped live

A noindex tag or a robots block that protected the staging site goes live with it. The site looks perfect and disappears from search within days.

Redirects that chain

Old URL to interim URL to final URL. Each hop loses a little and wastes crawl budget, and chains three deep are common after a second restructure.

Content that quietly did not carry

A page survives, its address survives, but the FAQ block or the schema did not come across. It stops ranking for what it used to and nobody notices because the page still loads.

What We Have Learned Running These

The most expensive migration problems we have dealt with were not redirect failures — those get caught quickly because pages 404 visibly. The costly ones were pages that migrated successfully but arrived missing the thing they ranked for, and nobody noticed because the URL still worked and the page still looked fine.

That is why the pre-launch inventory has to capture more than a URL list. Recording canonicals, schema, headings and word counts per key page gives you something to diff against afterwards, which turns a vague sense that traffic is down into a specific list of pages that lost specific elements. Our migration support is built around that comparison.

How Long Should You Watch Rankings After Launch?

At least eight weeks, with the closest checks in the first fourteen days. That opening fortnight is when Google recrawls the old addresses and either follows each redirect or drops the page, so look at the page indexing report in Search Console every few days and run a crawl for unexpected 404s.

From week three onward, compare every key page’s rankings, clicks and leads against the baseline you recorded before launch, once a week for six weeks. A page still under its baseline after a month has usually lost something specific, such as a heading, a block of copy or its internal links, and the pre-launch inventory tells you which one.

Migration Questions

What is a website migration in SEO terms?
Any change that alters URLs, hosting, structure, platform or domain — a redesign that changes page addresses counts just as much as moving to a new domain. What matters is not the visual change but whether the addresses search engines have indexed still resolve to equivalent content afterwards.
Will I lose rankings when I migrate?
A short dip is normal while search engines re-crawl and re-associate URLs, typically a few weeks. A sustained loss is not normal and almost always indicates a specific fault: missing redirects, content that did not carry across, blocked crawling on the new site, or pages that lost the elements they were ranking for.
What is the single most important migration step?
The pre-launch inventory. Crawl the live site and record every URL that earns traffic, the backlinks pointing at it, its canonical and schema, and its indexed status. Without that snapshot there is no way to prove after launch that something is missing, because you no longer have anything to compare against.
How long should I keep redirects in place?
Permanently, in practice. A year is the common advice, but old links keep sending traffic for far longer and the cost of keeping a redirect map is close to zero. Removing redirects later is a self-inflicted wound with no upside.
Should I migrate content and design at the same time?
Preferably not. Changing URLs, content and design together makes it impossible to attribute a traffic change to any one of them. Where the schedule allows, migrate the structure first and confirm stability, then change the content. Where it does not, the pre-launch inventory becomes even more important.
What should I monitor after launch?
Indexed page count, crawl errors, redirect chains, and rankings for your top fifty URLs, checked daily for the first fortnight and weekly after that. Also confirm analytics is recording, because a broken tag after launch means the recovery period is invisible and you will not know whether things improved.
