How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Breaking the Rules)
Most review programmes fail for the same reason: the ask depends on somebody remembering to make it. Build the request into the job and the volume takes care of itself — and stays inside the rules that get other businesses filtered.
Ask every satisfied customer within a day of the moment they were happiest, send a direct link to the review form, and make the request a step in the job rather than something someone remembers. Consistency produces volume; cleverness does not.

Timing beats wording — A request sent the day a job completes converts several times better than the same words attached to an invoice a fortnight later.
One link, no friction — The direct review link, not your homepage. Every extra tap loses people who genuinely intended to write something.
Velocity over total — Two to four a month for a year reads as an operating business. Twenty in one week reads as a campaign, to both readers and filters.
Build It Into the Job
Three decisions, then it runs itself.

Pick the moment, per service
Job signed off, delivery received, problem solved. Identify the single point in each service where a customer is most pleased, and attach the ask there permanently.

Decide who sends it
The person the customer dealt with, not a central inbox. A request from the technician who did the work converts far better than a branded email from an address nobody recognises.

Assign the replies
One named person replies to everything within a business day, with owner escalation below four stars, and a shared understanding of which reviews can actually be removed. Response quality collapses when replying is everybody's job.

Three practices that are common and genuinely risky.

Screening before you ask
Sending a satisfaction survey and routing only the happy ones to Google is gating. It is against policy, detectable in the ratings curve, and increasingly a regulatory matter.

Kiosk-farming reviews
Collecting several reviews from one location and network in an afternoon produces a pattern filters are specifically designed to catch. The reviews often vanish weeks later.

Buying them outright
An FTC exposure with penalties attached, and the reputational damage when it surfaces outlives whatever it was meant to fix.
Why the Wording Matters More Than It Used To
Review text has become source material. AI assistants asked about a business quote reviews close to word for word, which means the themes your customers happen to mention become the vocabulary a machine uses to describe you to the next buyer.
That does not license scripting reviews — it makes asking the right open question worth doing. “What stood out?” produces specifics; “please leave us five stars” produces a rating with no content behind it. The first is what gets quoted, and it is the same reason our reputation work treats review acquisition as message placement rather than score-keeping.

How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask every satisfied customer, within a day of the moment they were happiest, using a direct link to your review form, and make the request part of the job rather than an afterthought. Volume follows consistency far more than cleverness — a simple ask that always happens beats a well-crafted one that happens when someone remembers.
Is it against the rules to ask for reviews?
No. Asking customers for honest reviews is explicitly permitted. What is prohibited is offering anything of value in exchange, asking only customers you expect to be positive, and using software that screens people before routing them to the public form. The line is between soliciting feedback and buying a rating.
What is review gating and why does it matter?
Review gating is surveying customers first and sending only the happy ones to Google. It breaches platform policy, has drawn regulator attention, and is trivially visible in an implausibly perfect ratings distribution. It also deprives you of the negative feedback that would have told you what to fix.
Can I offer a discount for a review?
No. Offering money, discounts, entries into prize draws or any other consideration for a review violates Google's policies and creates an FTC exposure. This holds even when you ask for an honest review in return — the incentive itself is the problem, not the sentiment requested.
How many reviews do I need?
Enough to be comparable with whoever ranks above you, which usually means matching the top three in your local results rather than reaching a round number. Recency counts too: twenty reviews spread across the last year generally serves you better than sixty that stopped arriving in 2023.
What should I ask customers to mention?
Ask what stood out rather than supplying wording. Their specifics — responsiveness, tidiness, fair pricing, turning up when promised — are what future customers read and what AI assistants now quote when describing your business. Supplying the words yourself is both against policy and obvious to readers.
