There are seven reasons this happens, and they are diagnosable in about twenty minutes. Work them in order — the first three account for most cases, and one of them is simply that you are searching from the wrong place.
Seven causes account for nearly every case: suspension, missing verification, a duplicate listing, proximity to the searcher, a wrong primary category, a name or address that breaches guidelines, or a listing too new to compete. Check them in that order.
Before assuming a problem exists, confirm it. Searching from your own premises while signed in produces results almost nobody else sees.
Check suspension first — A dashboard notice plus disappearance from Maps while still visible to you when signed in. Everything else is wasted effort until this is ruled out.
Then check for a twin — An old or owner-created duplicate splits your signals. Extremely common, and invisible unless you search for it deliberately.
Then check where you searched — Proximity is weighted heavily. Test incognito, and ideally from a different location, before concluding you are missing.
The Twenty-Minute Diagnosis
Three checks that resolve most cases without any tooling.

Search your exact business name incognito
If the listing appears for the exact name but not for your services, it exists and the issue is relevance or proximity. If it does not appear at all, it is suspension, verification or a duplicate.

Search your category from a nearby town
Use a map-based tool or simply ask someone a few miles away. If you appear for them and not for yourself, nothing is broken — you were measuring from the wrong point.

Audit the profile fields
Primary category, business name exactly as signage reads, address matching your registered entity, and service-area settings. Any mismatch here is both a ranking problem and a suspension risk.

Each one makes things worse rather than better.

Adding keywords to the business name
It briefly helps and is a leading suspension trigger. Your name should match your signage. Competitors doing it can be reported rather than imitated.

Creating a second listing
When a profile disappears the instinct is to make a new one. That creates the duplicate that guarantees the problem persists. Recover the original instead.

Bulk-editing everything at once
A burst of changes across name, address, categories and hours in one session looks like an account takeover. Change deliberately, a few fields at a time.
When It Is Not a Bug
A large share of the profiles we are asked to diagnose turn out to be working correctly and simply uncompetitive. The listing appears, but three businesses with more reviews, more recent activity and a closer address sit above it. That is not a fault to fix; it is a gap to close, and it takes months rather than an afternoon.
The distinction matters because the two situations have completely different costs. A suspension or duplicate is a repair. Being outranked is a programme — review velocity, profile activity and the website relevance that feeds the listing, which is what ongoing profile management actually consists of.
Missing Listing Questions
Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?
The seven common causes are: the profile is suspended, it is unverified, it is a duplicate competing with another listing, you are searching from outside your service area so proximity excludes you, the primary category is wrong, the business name or address violates guidelines, or the listing is simply too new. Work them in that order — the first four account for most cases.
Why can I not find my business but customers can?
Usually proximity and personalisation. Google weights distance from the searcher heavily in local results, so standing in your own premises produces a very different result set from a customer three towns away. Personalised history also affects what you see. Check in an incognito window and, ideally, from a different location before concluding anything is wrong.
How do I know if my Google Business Profile is suspended?
You will see a notice in the profile dashboard, and the listing disappears from Maps and the local finder while remaining visible to you when signed in. Common triggers are keyword stuffing in the business name, an address that does not match your registered entity, a service-area business displaying a street address, or a burst of edits in a short window.
How long does a new Google Business Profile take to appear?
Verification typically takes a few days to two weeks depending on method, and the listing can take several more weeks to compete meaningfully. A brand-new profile with no reviews, no photos and no activity has very little to rank on, so the early period is about completing the profile rather than waiting.
Can a duplicate listing stop my real one showing?
Yes, and it is one of the most common causes we find. Two listings for the same business split the signals between them and Google may show the wrong one or neither. Duplicates often originate from a previous owner, an old address, or an automated data feed — which is also a good moment to check who still has access to the listing. They need suppressing or merging carefully, because a careless merge can destroy review history permanently.
Does my category affect whether I show up?
Heavily. The primary category is the strongest relevance lever on a listing and determines which searches you are eligible for at all. A business categorised as a general contractor will struggle to appear for searches Google associates with a more specific trade, no matter how good the rest of the profile is.
