When somebody asks ChatGPT for a recommendation in your category, the answer comes from what it can retrieve about you and your competitors right now. Here is where it actually looks, and what changes whether your name appears.
You get recommended by being retrievable and corroborated: claimed profiles on the platforms it can reach, business details that agree across every source, genuine reviews whose wording describes your strengths, and plain statements of what you do and where you do it on your own site.
There is no submission, no index to join and nothing to buy. The inputs are all public sources, which is genuinely good news — they are things you can change this month.
Claimed profiles carry the weight — Structured, crawlable business data on platforms with reviews. Claiming one is minutes of work and the single cheapest lever available.
Review wording becomes your description — Assistants quote reviews nearly verbatim. What customers choose to mention becomes how a model characterises you to the next buyer.
Contradictions make it hedge — Conflicting addresses or service lists across sources produce vague answers, because the model has no basis for choosing between them.

Read the current answer
Ask, from a clean session, exactly what your buyer would ask. Save it. That transcript is your baseline and usually names the competitors you are actually losing to, which is worth the exercise on its own.

Treating it as a content problem
Publishing more blog posts rarely changes a recommendation answer. Entity data and third-party proof do. The instinct to write your way in is the most common wasted effort here.

What We Found Running This on Ourselves
We ran the probe on our own business before selling it to anyone. The assistants knew our founding year, our accreditation, both operators and our trades focus, and quoted a client review almost word for word. The entity layer was working.
What they got wrong was consistently proof-shaped: they described us as lacking things we actually had, because those things were not on a public URL. Reviews sat inside a JavaScript widget rather than in text, and client results lived in a portal nobody outside could reach. Fixing that was not a content project — it was moving existing proof somewhere a machine could fetch it, which is exactly what the GEO work consists of in practice.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Be retrievable and be corroborated. Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?
Not directly, but the correlation is strong because its retrieval surfaces the same kind of authoritative pages. In practice a business invisible in conventional search is usually invisible to ChatGPT too, which is why classic SEO remains the foundation rather than a separate track.
Do reviews affect what ChatGPT says about a business?
Heavily, and more specifically than most owners expect: assistants quote review text close to verbatim. The themes your customers write about become the vocabulary used to describe you. Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not for organic recommendations. There is no placement to buy in the generated answer, and anyone offering guaranteed inclusion is selling something they do not control. Paid ad formats in AI interfaces are a separate matter and clearly labelled where they exist.
How do I track whether this is working?
Keep a standing list of buyer questions, ask them from fresh sessions each cycle, and archive the replies verbatim. The same method applies across every engine, which the wider AI search guide sets out. Score three things per reply: did your name appear, was the description accurate, and which rivals were offered. Comparing archives month to month is the signal. It is a manual, unglamorous measurement and it is the only one that reflects what a buyer actually sees.
