Google ranks local results on three things, and only two of them are yours to change. Everything that works comes down to improving relevance and prominence enough to overcome a distance disadvantage you cannot edit.
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is fixed, so ranking higher means improving relevance — category, services and matching website content — and prominence, which is reviews, activity, citations and links, until they outweigh a distance disadvantage.
That framing rules out most of what gets sold as a Maps trick. There is no setting to toggle and no shortcut that is not also a suspension risk.
Relevance moves fastest — Primary category and service entries change what you are eligible for, and take effect in days rather than months.
Prominence compounds slowly — Reviews, activity and citations build over months. This is where most of the durable gain sits.
Distance is the constraint — You cannot move. Everything else has to be strong enough to beat someone closer than you.

Fix classification
Primary category matched to how customers search, every relevant secondary category, complete service entries written in customer language. Cheapest work available and the fastest to show.

Build the activity record
Photos from real jobs, posts on a cadence you can sustain, questions answered, reviews replied to within a business day. Together these say the business is operating.

Feed it from the website
Service and area pages give Google the relevance it reads back into the listing. This is where Maps work stops being a profile task and becomes local SEO.

All still widely recommended. All bad ideas.

Keywords in the business name
It does work briefly, which is why it persists. It is also the leading suspension trigger, and competitors can report it as easily as you can spot theirs.

A virtual office address
Ineligible under Google's guidelines and a common removal reason. If you have no staffed location in a town, compete there with service-area settings and genuine content instead.

Buying reviews
Detectable, an FTC exposure, and it poisons the review-text signal that AI assistants now quote when describing you.
Measure With a Grid, Not a Search
Searching your own term from your own office tells you almost nothing, because proximity dominates and you are standing at the most favourable point on the map. Businesses regularly conclude they rank first when they are invisible two miles away.
Grid tracking samples your position from many points across the area you actually sell into and returns a map rather than a number. It is the only view that shows whether a month's work moved anything, and it usually reveals that gains arrive unevenly — strong near the pin, thin at the edges, which tells you exactly where the next page or citation should point.

How do you rank higher on Google Maps?
Improve the two factors you control. Relevance comes from an accurate primary category, complete service listings, and website content that matches what searchers ask for. Prominence comes from review volume and recency, profile activity, citations and links. Distance is the third factor and it cannot be changed, which is why relevance and prominence have to over-compensate for it.
What are the Google Maps ranking factors?
Google names three: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile and site match the query; distance is how far you are from the searcher or the searched location; prominence is how well known and well regarded the business appears, drawing on reviews, activity, links and citations.
How important are reviews for Maps rankings?
Very, and recency matters as much as count. A listing with forty reviews from three years ago reads as less active than one with twenty from the last six months. Steady arrival of two to four genuine reviews per month outperforms a single burst, both for ranking and because platform filters are built to catch bursts.
Does posting on Google Business Profile help rankings?
Posts are a modest direct signal at best. Their real value is as evidence of an active, operating business, alongside fresh photos and answered questions. Treat posting as one part of an activity pattern rather than a lever on its own — a weekly post on an otherwise neglected profile changes very little.
How long does it take to rank in the Map Pack?
Category and service corrections can move positions within days because they change what you are eligible for. Prominence gains take longer: review velocity and website relevance typically show over three to six months. Grid tracking reveals movement well before a single-point rank check does.
Can I rank in towns where I have no address?
To a degree. A service-area business can rank outside its immediate vicinity, but distance still weighs against it, so winning a neighbouring town usually requires clearly stronger relevance and prominence than the businesses physically located there. Dedicated, genuinely written pages for those markets are what make it possible.
