AI Overviews do not have a ranking you can climb. They have a source list, drawn largely from pages already ranking for the query, chosen for how cleanly a passage answers it. That distinction changes what you actually do about it.
You cannot rank in an AI Overview — you get cited by one. Google builds the Overview from pages already ranking for the query and lifts passages that answer it cleanly on their own. The path in is therefore rank first, then structure the answering passage so it survives being extracted.
That reframing matters because it rules out most of what gets sold as AI Overview optimisation. There is no separate index and no submission process.
Eligibility is ranking — Cited sources come overwhelmingly from the conventional first page or two. If you are not there, formatting work is premature.
The unit is the passage — Google lifts a section, not a page. Each answering passage has to stand alone without the sentence before it.
Specifics get quoted — Numbers, ranges, named steps and plain definitions extract cleanly. Adjectives and build-up do not.
What Actually Moves the Needle

Find which queries even carry one
Not every query triggers an AI Overview, and the set shifts. Check your actual target queries before assuming the problem exists — on many local and commercial terms it does not.

Get the page competitive first
Crawlable, fast, genuinely relevant, internally linked. This is ordinary technical and content work, and it is the whole of the entry requirement.

Rewrite the answering passage
Heading states the question, first sentence answers it outright, no pronoun leaning on prior text. Then the supporting detail. This costs an hour per page and is the only step unique to the surface.
Three Things Not Worth Your Time
Each of these gets sold. None of them works.

AI-specific files and markup
The proposed AI text files and chunking formats were dismissed in Google's own May 2026 guidance. Standard crawlable HTML with ordinary schema remains the format that counts.

Keyword stuffing the answer
Extraction favours clarity, not density. Passages written to hit a keyword count read worse to both the model and the reader, and lose to a cleaner competitor.

Chasing every informational query
Overviews hit informational clicks hardest. Winning a citation you get no click from has brand value but little revenue value — pick the queries where being named actually matters.
What We Can See From Our Own Tracking
Across the client SERPs we monitor, AI Overviews now appear on a majority of tracked queries, and the pattern is consistent: informational phrasing draws one far more often than commercial phrasing. A query like how long does something take almost always carries one; hire someone for it in a named city frequently does not.
The practical read is that this is a content-format problem on a subset of your pages rather than a sitewide emergency. Restructure the question pages so their answers extract cleanly, leave the commercial pages doing their job, and keep the technical foundation healthy enough that the pages are candidates in the first place.
AI Overview Questions
How do you rank in Google AI Overviews?
You do not rank in them — you get cited by them. Google assembles an AI Overview from results already surfacing for that search, selecting passages that answer it cleanly and self-containedly. So the route in is: rank on page one or two for the underlying query, then structure the relevant passage so it answers the question without depending on surrounding context.
Do AI Overviews use the top-ranking pages?
Largely, though not strictly in order. Studies and our own tracked SERPs both show heavy overlap between cited sources and the conventional top ten, with occasional citations from further down where a passage answers the question unusually directly. Treat first-page ranking as the entry requirement rather than a guarantee.
What kind of content gets cited most?
Direct definitions, step sequences, comparisons, specific numbers and short factual answers — content where a single passage can be lifted and still make sense. Long narrative paragraphs that build an argument across several sentences are poor candidates, however well written, because no clean extract exists.
Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?
It helps a machine classify what is already on the page, and FAQPage or Article markup is worth having. What it cannot do is invent an answer the visible copy does not give. Markup on a page that never states the answer plainly will not produce a citation.
Do AI Overviews reduce my traffic?
On informational queries, substantially — our adopted research puts the click loss around fifty-eight percent. On commercial and local queries the effect is far smaller, because people still click through to compare, check service areas and contact someone. That asymmetry is the argument for concentrating effort on buying-intent pages.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Partially, and it is usually a bad trade. The `nosnippet` and `max-snippet` directives limit what Google can display, which can keep you out of an Overview — but they also suppress ordinary snippets, costing conventional clicks. Almost no business benefits from that exchange.
