What Is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is the work of making a website readable and quotable by large language models: content that survives a fetch without JavaScript, facts specific enough to be worth citing, and business details consistent enough across sources that a model can resolve who you are.

The single most useful idea here is the split between training and retrieval, because it tells you which effort is wasted.

Training data is a closed door — A snapshot of the web from some past point. You cannot edit it, buy into it, or hurry it. Optimising for it is not a strategy.
Retrieval is the open one — Fetched live when the question is asked. Everything you control lives here — and it responds to changes in days, not model generations.
Consistency beats volume — A model reconciles your details across many sources. Conflicting records make it hedge or pick wrong; agreement makes it confident.

Check you are fetchable at all

Confirm retrieval bots are not blocked in robots.txt or by a firewall rule nobody remembers adding, then fetch your key pages without scripting and read what comes back. This step alone finds the problem on a surprising share of sites.

Move proof out of scripts

Reviews, testimonials, results and credentials rendered by JavaScript are invisible to a raw fetch. Static text with matching schema makes them citable — the same fix that made our own nineteen reviews readable rather than trapped in a widget.

Make the facts agree everywhere

Name, address, phone, founders and service lines identical across your site and every claimed profile. This is the least interesting task on the list and reliably the one with the largest effect on how accurately you get described.

The site that renders only in a browser

Content injected client-side looks perfect to the owner and to a normal visitor, and is simply absent when a bot takes the served HTML. The tell is a page that looks full on screen and nearly empty in view-source. It is also the most under-diagnosed technical SEO issue generally, not just for models.

The business with three different addresses

An old suite number on one directory, a dropped unit on another, a different phone on a third. A model asked where you are will either hedge or pick one, and it has no way to know which is current. Reconciling those records is dull, cheap, and disproportionately effective.

What This Does Not Mean

It does not mean rewriting your site for machines at the expense of people. Every recommendation above — be fetchable, be specific, be consistent — also makes a page better for a human reader and for ordinary rankings, which is the test any of this should pass before you spend money on it.

It also does not mean chasing every new proposed standard. The pattern over the last two years has been speculative formats announced loudly and adopted by nobody. Clean HTML, honest schema and consistent facts have outlasted all of them, and that is what our answer engine work is built on.

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO is the practice of making a website usable by large language models — ensuring content is fetchable without JavaScript, factually specific enough to be quoted, and consistent enough across sources that a model can resolve who the business is. It overlaps heavily with ordinary technical SEO and content quality; the additions are mostly about retrievability and entity clarity.

How do language models learn about my business?

Two routes. Training data is a snapshot of the public web at a point in time, and you cannot edit or expedite it. Retrieval happens live at the moment of the question, where the model fetches current sources. Perplexity is the easiest place to watch this happen, because it shows the sources it used. Retrieval is where nearly all your influence sits, which is why crawlability and third-party presence matter more than trying to get into a training set.

Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

It depends what you sell. Publishers whose revenue depends on their own pageviews often block them. For a service business trying to be recommended, blocking retrieval bots removes you from the answers your buyers are reading. Most local and B2B businesses should allow them, and should check they are not blocked accidentally — which happens more often than people expect.

Does JavaScript stop models reading my site?

Frequently, yes. Many retrieval fetches take the raw HTML without executing JavaScript, so content injected client-side may simply not exist from the model's point of view. Reviews in widgets, tabbed content and lazy-loaded text are the usual casualties. Fetch a page with scripting disabled and read what remains — that is closer to what a model sees.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

No. It was a reasonable proposal that did not get adopted, and Google's May 2026 guidance dismissed the AI-specific file and chunking formats. Standard crawlable HTML, clean headings and real schema do the job. Time spent on speculative formats is better spent making existing pages fetchable.

How is this different from ordinary SEO?

About eighty percent is not different at all — crawlability, clear structure, factual accuracy and authority serve both. The distinct part is writing for extraction rather than persuasion, and caring about consistency of your business facts across third-party sources, because a model assembles its picture from all of them rather than from your homepage.
