For a service business that wants to rank in local search, add custom features and own its site outright, WordPress is the stronger platform. Squarespace is fine for a simple portfolio or a short-lived project where convenience matters more than control, and where nobody plans to build on it later.
We build on WordPress daily and have also maintained a client site on Squarespace, so this comparison comes from both sides.

If search is the reason you have a website at all, the third row matters most.
We will say it plainly: not every business needs WordPress. A photographer showing a gallery, a consultant with a one-page brochure, or an event that lasts a season can all do well on Squarespace. The templates look polished, hosting is included and there is nothing to update.
The trade-off in any WordPress vs Squarespace decision shows up once the business starts competing for local searches. Squarespace works well as a finished product; it is harder to treat as a foundation for dozens of service and town pages, custom tools and detailed structured data.
Cost is closer than people expect. WordPress itself is free, yet hosting, updates and a professional build all carry a price, while the Squarespace plan bundles hosting and upkeep into one monthly bill. The better question is which platform will still fit in three years. When the answer is not Squarespace, WordPress website design is the route we take for service businesses.

For a long time our own review section came from a third-party embed that crawlers saw as an empty box. Since this site is on WordPress, the fix was ours to make. Steven built a lightweight in-house plugin that outputs each review directly in the HTML, along with the matching review markup.

Posts and pages can be exported, but the design, forms and some settings do not come across, so a move is really a rebuild. What matters most is pointing each retired Squarespace address at its replacement so Google passes along whatever the old pages had earned.

For businesses that need many location and service pages, custom schema and redirect control, yes. Squarespace covers the basics but limits how far you can go.
Out of the box, usually. WordPress becomes just as easy to edit when it is set up well and someone else handles updates.
The software is free, but you pay for hosting, upkeep and the build. Squarespace bundles those into a subscription with fewer options.
We can review it and advise, but ongoing SEO or redesign work happens on WordPress hosted by us, and bringing the site across costs nothing extra.
Not if every old address redirects to its matching new page and titles and content carry over. That mapping is part of our migration checklist.
