A local citation is any published mention of your business name, address and phone number, whether or not it links to your site — and consistency across those mentions is what tells search engines the business record is trustworthy enough to rank.
The practical consequence: a citation program is mostly a correction project. The listings already exist. Most of them are wrong.
The signal is agreement across independent sources. A citation with no link still counts, which is why removing bad data outperforms adding new listings.
A handful of data providers supply hundreds of downstream directories. Correct them first or your fixes get overwritten automatically.
A second listing at an old address splits authority and confuses matching. Suppressing duplicates is usually the highest-impact item in the whole audit.

A local citation is any online mention of a business's name, address and phone number — on a directory, a review platform, a chamber page, an industry association listing or a data aggregator. Citations do not have to link to your website to count. Their function is corroboration: consistent details across many independent sources give search engines confidence that the business is real and located where it claims.
As a foundation rather than a growth lever. Consistent citations are close to a prerequisite for local ranking, but adding the two-hundredth directory listing will not lift a business that is already consistent. The value is concentrated in fixing inconsistency and in the specific platforms that feed others, not in raw listing count.
Far fewer than the packages sold by volume suggest. A core set of major platforms, the four data aggregators, and the directories specific to your industry covers what search engines actually read. Beyond that the returns collapse, and low-quality bulk submissions can create the duplicate mess a cleanup later has to unwind.
NAP consistency means the same name, address and phone format everywhere it appears. Conflicting versions force search engines to guess which record is authoritative, and a stale address circulating through data aggregators keeps repopulating onto new directories long after you moved. That is why the aggregators are corrected before the individual directories.
Audit and submission work runs two to four weeks. Propagation is slower: aggregator updates can take four to twelve weeks to reach downstream directories, and a few stubborn sources require manual claim or removal requests. Ranking effects, where there are any, follow the propagation rather than the submission.
Generally no. Bulk submission tools create listings you cannot control, in formats you did not approve, on sites nobody reads. Worse, they frequently generate the duplicates that later suppress your real listing. Targeted beats voluminous every time in this particular corner of the work.
Aggregator data repopulates. A build without a monitoring cycle is a job you will pay for again in eighteen months.
